Conventions of Horror

Factors commonly seen in horror films which follow the traditional codes and conventions:
  • Equilibrium - An introduction to a typically normal day to day lifestyle, which is often disturbed in a horrific way or through a build in tension.
  • Credits - They should fit into the theme of horror by using a creepy font, or including odd or disjointed movements which link with the theme of horror.
  • Characters - Depending on the film, the majority of the characters are usually quite young, showing their vulnerability and naivety.
  • Villain(s) - A mysterious killer whose identity is hidden from the audience, often revealed in a twist in the end of the film.
  • Setting - Dark, stormy settings create an atmosphere of eeriness, and the theme of isolation is commonly used when choosing the setting for the film.
