Film Opening Analysis 1 - Quarantine 2

The film starts with the institutional logos, which have been animated in such a way to symbolise an aeroplane's headlights; which is fitting, as the film is set on an aeroplane. The first scene starts with an establishing shot of a city from the perspective of a landing plane. The camera zooms slowly into the runway and the diegetic sounds of the cabin crew and pilots are heard. The scene then cuts to a shot of two flight attendants in a taxi, on their way to the airport. The pair are running late, and are busy getting themselves ready.for their flight. As they board the plane the main characters are introduced to the audience; the pilots and other cabin crew, along with the passengers on board. There is a sense of equilibrium on board the flight, as the characters get to know one another through lighthearted conversation. However, there is a shift in the mood of the film after the pilot begins to feel ill, with his nose running and his eyes reddening. Another passenger seems to be feeling similar symptoms, and he begins sneezing, spreading the germs. This creates suspense as we know the film is based on a zombie-like virus, which can easily be spread from one person to another.
Almost half of the passengers have brought animals onto the flight, which creates a sense of unease as the pilot previously stated that he caught his illness from his pet dog. One man has even brought a cage full of hamsters onto the flight, which bite one of the men whilst he tries to move them into an overhead storage shelf. As the plane is driving down the runway, tension is built through the use of a series of quick-cutting shots. These increase in severity until the plane has finally taken off, easing the sense of anxiety. Tension doesn't completely fade, however, as a shot of the bitten man   groaning with his back turned to the audience adds to the feeling of uncertainty.

Soon afterwards in a shot of two characters speaking, the same man is seen in the background with his face hidden, which reinforces the suspicion that he has succumbed to the infection.

There is an ever-growing sense that the equilibrium on the plane is going to be disturbed, as we realise that now a lady's cat is also sick. The pilot also continues to sneeze, along with the bitten man showing serious signs of illness. His speech soon becomes slurred, and a close up shot of his wound emphasizes to the audience that the infection is spread through being bitten, and can pass from animals to humans. The audience is left wondering what will happen to the passengers of the flight next, and the suspense continues to rise throughout the rest of the film.
